Katz’s Women Hospital at Long Island Jewish Medical Center

A simple space for respite and healing

As part of the North Shore LIJ Medical Center expansion by SOM, this landscape design reflects both the hospital’s commitment to healing and its reputation as a progressive health care institution. A central campus green is a place for reflection and respite, surrounded by the calming sound of flowing water over stone. This large landscape island is located at the core of the hospital entry and is both flexible and useful enough to host activities ranging from contemplative seating to small performances, all within a lush contemporary setting of lawns, boulders, and native grasses. Not implemented as part of the original building due to funding constrains, the intimate “women’s” garden extends lobby views and activities outdoors. This small expressive space is a quiet contemplative garden room that will host café seating clusters and glass “healing” shelters with poetic inscriptions. This project was created as part of a collaborative team at Thomas Balsley Associates with Laura Stedenfeld as Landscape Designer; all images are courtesy Thomas Balsley Associates.
